Mental Health First Aid

In the same manner that CPR training helps a non-medical professional assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps an individual who doesn't have clinical training assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives.

A participant in Mental Health First Aid is instructed in various mental health situations, such as how to help someone through a panic attack, engage with someone who may be suicidal, support a person experiencing psychosis and/or assist an individual who has overdosed.

Participants:

  • Learn the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse disorders and self-injury;
  • Gain an understanding of the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma;
  • Are taught an action plan that helps them to assess the situation, select and implement appropriate interventions, and help an individual in crisis connect with proper professional care;
  • Learn about the evidence-based professional, peer, social and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem.

Mental Health First Aid is an excellent resource for all community groups and neighbors. It is available through the TTI Training Department and anyone may sign up for the course.
